I'm finding it so refreshing to have a companion who isn't all head-over-heels-ooey-gooey-doe-eyes-oooooooo-Doctor-mmmmmm that she's able to meet him on equal terms. And Donna not only chooses to meet him on equal terms, but she forces him to treat her as an equal, and not in a high-and-mighty way, but in a we're-in-this-together way, like when she helps him to push the lever that triggers the eruption. She knows what will happen, and she refuses to allow the burden to fall entirely on the Doctor's shoulder.
And she is old enough to have lived her live, and she's seeing the new wonders past the TARDIS doors backed with her own life experience to compare them to. I could be wrong, but I think Donna is the oldest companion there's been (Although I don't know if Ian and Barbara's ages were ever spelled out, I think of them as early 30s as opposed to Donna's late 30s) and it really brings something new to the show for me.
She is with the Doctor on her terms, and she's not going to let anyone forget that!
I saw a shamefully stupid thread in which a bunch of fangirls were crowing that, in some interview, RTD had described Donna as being older than the Doctor. The fangirls all congratulated themselves on knowing that he is of course centuries her senior, missing several other ways in which the statement is absolutely true, including the fact that the Doctor is in many ways a ten year old who's eaten too many E-numbers.
Yeah, ya notice how the dr and his "consort" get accused of being MR/MRS at least once an episode so she can say NO WAY, just in case anyone was under any illusions - I'm picking it as a running gag - and still Donna and the Dr are two for two for ending up as somebodies gods. Maybe t and a isn't everything after all. Or maybe KateOrman is right and Dr who is written for girls -- and they like their men cute and their women feisty.
