He's on a special diet for awhile now, and antibiotics still, but he's definitely happy to be home and is doing well. I can tell by the way he's lying in his bed, cleaning his bum with gusto.  Using his tongue, of course.

He has a protozoa infection, and most likely that combined with the rawhide moving through him triggered the pancreatitus and intestinal inflammation. All three vets who worked on him agree that it probably all stems from the rawhide chew bones. So, no more of those. Ever.

Guess what the first thing was that he dug out of the snow when he got home?

Luckily, it was one he had before all this started, but it still went in the trash.

I swung by to see my vet one the way home. She almost seemed unhappy to see me, and was really apologetic that she had needed to send me to a different vet hospital. I told her that as far as I was concerned, she was still my vet; she had just had a situation she wasn't able to deal with. She also told me that she was sure Ike was a goner. I'll have to clear that up with her- if there ever comes a time when she feels in her professional opinion that it's best for any of my pets to be put down, I should be told about it, no need to beat around the bush. I think she feels like she let me down, which she didn't, and isn't important any way- Ike's health is.

Both the vets at the animal hospital said Ike's hip arthritis is the worst they've ever seen. I think he's still got at least another year left in him though.

He and I are both very happy that he's home. Thanks for all the support from every body; it really helped out.
