Short update- The holiday came and went, it was a short week at work, and I enjoyed my day off. I have to get a column out this weekend, and I kind of know what I want to write about, and I'll have to do some research in Lj for some of my ideas- tidbits I've posted in the past. Not for the first time am I seeing the value of having a journal, even if I rarely update it.

Uh oh. The tree is leaning over! I bet the cat was playing in it.

There. All fixed.

I got up at 4:30 am to make breakfast for Andy before he went to work- pancakes, bacon and eggs. The bacon was good, the pancakes not so great- skillet was a little too hot and the batter was too thick. So, I think I'm going to try again New Year's Day.

Andy got me some really neat gifts. Granted, he picked them from my Amazon wishlist.

Claptrap! And a desktop Dalek! Doug got me the Marrow Action figure.

I really liked what Andy got me ... but as he opened his presents, his disappointment was noticeable, and I felt kind of bad.

His birthday is December 12th, and I wanted to get him a nice flashlight, because he's always annoyed that he can't find one around the house. Plus, one of ours broke, so we only have the one household flashlight, and my 'work' flashlight. So, for his birthday, I got him this flashlight. First, we discovered it required special batteries, so I ordered them too. Then, we determined the flashlight didn't work. Major disappointment! And, for a simple birthday present, it was getting pretty pricey.

One of the problems I have with Amazon these days is that there is no way to tell the country of origin of the products being ordered. I immediately realized when I submitted a exchange request for the flashlight that English was not the first language of the person writing to me. This really isn't a problem, especially considering how polite they were, but I have been burnt in the past with cheap Chinese knockoff items, and I try to avoid them when I can.

Dear customer,
Sorry for the inconvenience. We have checked every
item before we sent them out. Can you check if the spring inside the
torch connect well, and the switch is loose? If all right, our data guy
suggest you to take apart the torch, then tighten up the lamp cap.
Please kindly have a try and let us know the update.
Please do not worry, we will be here for you until the problem resolved.
Look forward to your reply.
Have a nice day
Best Regards
Happy Xmas

After telling the company I had tried everything (sadly, the flashlight came with no instructions and didn't even look like the picture on the amazon page), they replied:

Dear friend,
Thanks for your mail,
How about we resend or refund to you as compensation?
As our company policy, for a replacement, we won't refund the money or
resend the third time if the second package still like that. If you do
not want to wait for the new order, you can choose a full refund. Please
advise how you want it be resolved so that we can take prompt action.
pls understand
Waiting for your reply
Have a nice day
Best regards

I don't really care for refund policy, but I wrote back that I would gladly exchange the bad flashlight for a new one.

Dear buyer
Thank you for your mail
it is our great honor to serve you
we will resend the item to you ASAP
pls wait in patience
hope you can get it soon
Have a nice day
Best regards
Happy Xmas

So ... I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but if I receive a new one, the old one will be sent back to them. If the new one doesn't work, I'm asking for a refund. If they refuse, I'm talking to Amazon.

Anyway, I thought it would be nice at Christmas if I gave Andy even more flashlights! He has always said that he likes practical gifts that he can use, so what would be better than a bunch of little flashlights that he could put all over the house, so he could always find one when he needed one!

In a local store, I also found a 1 pound Reese's Peanut Butter Cups gift pack, which I thought was really fun. I figured he could sit it beside the giant Gummy Bear I bought for him a few years ago.

i also saw a pair of boxer shorts at the drugstore that I bought for him on a whim- they had a picture of a bear in a truck on the ass, spinning in mud and leaving skids. I thought they were really cute, and might bring back a little fun to Andy's privates, so to speak.

When I met Andy years ago, he used to wear a lot of novelty underpants. And then he stopped, and seems so much more serious now. I've always sort of blamed my self for that.

Anyway, with each gift he opened, his face fell just a little more, and I felt terrible, especially considering how excited I was by his presents.

The next day at work, I found his wishlist on Steam, and bought him a few games to make up for my lack of good gift giving this year.

Dec 26 10:04 AM obliviator1 Lantz: Aww Tim, the steam gifts weren't necessary. I didn't mean to make you feel bad or anything. I mean, the other gifts were gifts, can't really complain about them (except the mass amount of flashlights, wtf lol)
Dec 26 10:05 AM The Outsider: You didn't; I made myself feel bad because I should have thought about them better. I
knew you would like the reese's peanut butter cups; I hoped you'd be amused my the boxer shorts and maybe get a little of your sense of fun back about them; and I thought you'd like all the flashlights, but I shouldn't have gotten them right after I got you the big one. Plus, after th big one didn't work, it just was a lot of dissapoointment for you this year, and I wanted to make it a litlte better for you, especially after seeing the super-neat things you got me.

  • Dec 26 10:10 AM obliviator1 Lantz: Eh. I like my plain white boxers :d But yeah, the others are funny, but you should wear them (since all your gas explosions sound wet anyways) :d

    Dec 26 10:11 AM obliviator1 Lantz: wut  :d

Dec 26 10:12 AM The Outsider:I just remember when we met you wore all teh funny boxer shorts, but after boot camp all you would wear are the plain white ones, and it made you so much more ... serious, I guess.
Dec 26 10:12 AM obliviator1 Lantz:Eh. Just easier to dress when there's only one choice. Cheaper too.

(I'm not sure what's going on with the formatting here.)

So, everything worked out in the end, i suppose. For the last few days, as the Steam sales continue, Andy and I have been buying and gifting games and throwing them at each other, lol. It's been fun.

  • Oh, and my brand-spanking new laptop? The secondary video card is bad, and has to be replaced. It was shipped back today; as soon as the get it, they'll send me a new one.

The package won't get there until January 8th. *sigh*
