Excitement... in the kitchen!

outsdrSo, I was looking around on Boing Boing a few days ago, and I found a recipe for Root Beer Float Cupcakes that look really, really tasty... so, I figured I'd try making some. Last night I did so.
It turns out that I have only one muffin pan that makes 12 muffins. So, the rest of the mix went in bundt cake pan and was baked for twice as long the cupcakes. The recipe was fairly easy to make, and everything turned out nice enough. Here are some pictures from this morning:
I let Andy try the first one, and went out and had one for myself. While I was cutting out my first bite, Andy came back out of his room with a really bad expression on his face, and dumped his in the trash. He said, "Looks great- tastes like poop."
I tried mine, and had to agree to some extent. The cupcake itself had very little flavor. The only root beer taste came from the root beer schnapps that was poured on them after baking. Imagine eating and choking on a really dry nasty cupcake, and then trying to wash it down with a shot of root beer schnapps, some icing, and a mouthful of sugar.
So... I bundled them all up and brought them to work to see if anyone else likes them. So far, no one has touched them. Intitially, I was just going to bring the cake, so I made it without the schnapps being poured over it, just using plain root beer. Maybe it's better that way. I've been afraid to try.
Here's the comment I posted at the site of the recipe:
"I made this last night, and boy, what a disappointment. They look gorgeous and appealing, but the only flavor in the cupcake comes from the tablespoon of root beer schnapps that was poured over them after they were baked. The "glaze" was a runny, sticky, tasteless mess. The same results could have been had from mixing some butter cream icing with a shot of root beer schnapps. That was an expensive amount of ingredients that went straight in the trash. A friend who tried the recipe also had the same results & reaction."
The site says something about only allowing "happy thoughts & comments", so maybe my comment will be deleted.
