Christmas, my best friend got me the Dr.Who Collection, featuring the two Peter Cushing Dr. Who movies and the Dalekmania special. I just finished watching the first movie, Dr. Who and the Daleks.

The color are amazing. Everything looks as though it's made of candy, especially the Daleks. Peter Cushing walks in an odd half-squat, as though he's perpetually in need of the restroom. Ian exhibits a particular brand of slapstick clumsiness that I've never found appealing. Susan is a reserved child, the kind of 10-year old that in today's world would seem to be 32. And Barabra begins the movie as a bit of a scream-queen, but ends going toe-to-toe in a rough-and-tumble throwdown hand-to-hand with the Daleks for the fate of the planet itself.

The movie is a piece of an entirely different time and space. The pacing is dreadfully sleep-inducing slow; the plot paper thin. The Thals predicted the 80s with a look that was so new wave that Boy George could have been crowned their king. Or queen.

And yet, there's a certain charm to the film, probably because it's like travelling in time. It's certainly no worse than many of the TV adaptation movies that Hollywood turns out these days.
