Weekly Update part 2
Yes I should be doing other things. Like percolate out a column. Or sort some more photos for Tumblr. But I'm feeling a little deadbeat.
(Speaking of tumblr, I just snuck a peek there .... damn, but my Doctor Who posts get a lot of reblogs & likes!)
Anyway, a few things happened this week that I left out, so here we go.
A new game store has opened in town (I think it's the only one ever, actually) and it was discussed a few times at the office, but none of the salespeople were assigned the account ... finally, I asked my boss if I could have the account. She said she'd have to check with the publisher, since she wasn't sure what he'd think about letting me do some sales (Whatever. As I pointed out, I haven't had a raise in 5 years.) Anyway, it so ended up that I did get the go ahead to do sales to them. Out of the two salespeople, the older, more alzheimers-prone lady didn't care in the least, as she didn't understand ANYTHING in the store. The other, hypochondriac-prone lady, sort of snorted when she saw the sales sheet and said, "Oh, they're letting YOU do sales now?" Damn straight, your unpleasantness. Go fake an illness.
So I went down to the store on Wednesday, taking a box of my Magic cards with me. I figured that would be a good way to break the ice. I haven't really even looked at those cards since 1995.
Nice guy; we talked for awhile, he looked at my cards and made not-overly appreciative noises, I told him about the paper, he seemed interested but maybe further down the road.
And then, that evening at 6, Andy and I ended up there for a Magic the Gathering draft tournament.
It was the first time either of us had played in a very long time. There were kids there playing who weren't even born when some of the cards I have were released, let alone played with. I felt ... old.
The rules had changed a little, but everyone was friendly and nice, which is EXACTLY what I was looking for- I just wanted to get us out of the house for an evening to do something different. And it worked. I enjoyed myself. Andy and I ended up being randomly paired to play against each other. During discussion of the rules and cards etc, I found myself saying "Back in my day ..." far more times than I ever expected I would or was comfortable with; it gave me an odd mixture of remorse, regret, and pleasure.
Unfortunately, it was really really hot in the store, and by 8 pm, we were ready to call it a night, even though the first round had just ended. I paid my regrets to the store owner, explained we had to wake up early to be grownups, but promised we'd be back again. And we will- I had fun playing. Last night, I went through my box of cards (all blue and white - I can't find the box of black red and green!) and thinking of deck builds.
Thursday I went and took care of
asia_sky 's post office box for her. i was expecting a lot more of a hassle than there was ... which was none! The only problem I had was that they wouldn't actually close the box, since I didn't have her signature, but let me know that as soon as her change of address went through, it would be closed automatically.
Friday, a mystery package arrived, with two bottles of flavored syrups - one violet and one lavender! I was pretty bemused as to who would send me this, and then when I searched my emails for the name of the company that shipped them, I found an email from asia_sky telling me she was sending me something as a thank you! So far above and beyond, and it REALLY made my day.
All in all, it was nice to have a week that weighed towards the nice side.

I love the syrups ... so far, I've only tried a small taste of the violet. I was expecting something like this:
But it tastes more like this:
I'm going to have to try a larger sample to see if it stays soapy. Although, I like just looking at the bottles!
