2011
So.
A new year, and what am I going to do with this one?
For a very long time, my new year resolution has always been to make the new year better than the last. This is a little borad, however, so I've also started tossing in some other goals as well. In 2011, I would like to:
-Stop smoking. I haven't had a cigarette yet in 2011. There are times I feel like chewing through a cinder block to get one, however.
-Eat healthier. I'm 40, going on 41; time to stop eating like I'm in my 20s.
-Get those damn websites up.
-Spend less time on facebook and more time on livejournal
-Get some of my poetry books ready for publishing on lulu. I'm working on that; I've got one almost ready (The deluxe hardcover color version reprint of "Welcome to the Outside" from 2001) and once it's finished the standard black & white version should be quick enough to make as well. What will take longer is "Welcome Back to the Outside" where I collect chapbooks 16-30; some of those I don't seem to have digital files for any more; so I'm going to have to dig through boxes in hopes of finding a physical copy that's either in good enough condition to scan, or at least give me something to work from to recreate the chapbook. I'm also not sure if all of the later chapbooks were actually created, or just planned; I'm fairly certain I got to #26 at least, with the next four planned out.
-Write more. I'd like to publish a column a month in the paper. So far I've had one in December and January; three more are written and ready to go. A 650 word column isn't necessarily difficult; once I've got the right subject (Ike, the cat, my fridge, road trips, whatever) the column falls into place fairly easily. Finding the right subject, however, can be tricky.
-All of my medical bills that have accrued since 2005 and that I have been steadily paying on shoud be paid off this year, finally. Which will be fantastic- and just in time for me to rack up more. M neck isn't getting any better, of course, and I know eventually I'll need surgery. I'm hoping that a combination of weightloss and no more smoking will help, but it's only going to go so far. I'm due for a check up with my doctor anyway; I need to discuss this with him.
-That front tooth I had removed a few years back? I'd love to get it replaced this year. I'm thinking a gold tooth- something that adds character. Of course, this isn't going to be as simple as jamming a replacement in my mouth. First I need to see an orthodontist to check out the alignment of my jaw and teeth; this will most likely lead to braces at the very least; a breaking and re-alignment of my lower jaw at the most extreme. Then I'll need to have a titanium post implanted in my jaw. Finally, once this is all said and done, i can get the tooth put in. The tooth itself will probably end up being the cheapest part of the whole adventure; while I have no idea how much this is going ot cost, I expect the cost to be in the thousands of dollars. Ouch.
-Save more money. I want to move in two years. I need to be able to afford to do so.
-Enjoy life a little more.
So, 2011? I'm not going to say "Bring it on," because this isn't a challenge. I'd rather sling my arm over your shoulders and walk off together to see what the heck life has in store for us in the next 12 months.
